Prepared Before the Door Opens: The Foundation and Mission of MemberPrep

The Founder
Mikael E. LaRoche is a Washington, D.C.-area senior marketing and communications executive, brand strategist, and nonprofit leader whose career has been defined by one consistent purpose: building systems that make institutions stronger from the inside out. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Howard University with a Bachelor of Arts, LaRoche later returned to complete an Executive MBA at the same institution, where he earned membership in Beta Gamma Sigma, the highest honor in AACSB-accredited business programs. He holds additional certification in Business Management, Accounting, and Art from Cambridge University. Named to the C.B.C. Power 100 in 2025 and recognized in Marquis Who's Who in America in 2026, he brings more than fifteen years of executive communications, organizational leadership, and brand strategy to every initiative he undertakes.
Insider Credential
What separates LaRoche from a typical education technology founder is that he did not build MemberPrep from the outside looking in. He is the Immediate Past Chapter President of Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and currently serves as Director of Communications for the fraternity's Eastern Region, a constituency that includes elected officials, federal appointees, and judges across multiple states. From 2019 to 2021, he served as an on-campus Advisor to the Zeta Phi Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, Inc. at Howard University, working directly with student leaders navigating the responsibilities of active chapter life. He served as Head of Brand, Marketing, and Communications at Byte Back, Inc., a nationally recognized digital equity nonprofit, and as Creative Services Manager at WHUT, Howard University Television. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the House of Ruth and the Mu Lambda Foundation. This is a founder who has sat in the chapter room, stood at the podium, managed the crisis, and led the communications strategy before he ever built the platform.
What MemberPrep Is
MemberPrep is a self-paced digital education platform built to prepare individuals for the responsibilities of organizational membership before, during, and after the intake process. The curriculum spans 45 structured courses across more than 230 modules, including five mandatory foundational series and 30 elective tracks. LaRoche developed the full curriculum after thirteen years of active leadership within Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. It is currently being reviewed by a growing network of practitioners and professionals across relevant disciplines, including student organization advisors, hazing prevention researchers, campus risk management directors, nonprofit and student organization attorneys, certified parliamentarians, licensed counselors, campus psychologists, professors of applied ethics, financial consultants, DEI directors, Title IX and compliance officers, HR directors, cybersecurity professionals, project management professionals, career services directors, and graduate members of BGLO and NPC/NPHC organizations who have served from within. MemberPrep is not a collection of orientation slides. It is a structured curriculum with knowledge assessments, progress tracking, organizational analytics, and a certification standard built on genuine comprehension, not attendance.
The Standard Being Set
The analogy matters. The SAT does not guarantee a successful college student. The LSAT does not guarantee a great attorney. The GRE does not guarantee a productive graduate researcher. The ASVAB does not guarantee an exceptional soldier. Each of these assessments does one specific thing: it establishes a baseline of readiness. It confirms that a candidate has demonstrated the foundational knowledge required to enter an institution and meet its demands from day one. MemberPrep Certification operates on the same principle. Earning a MemberPrep Certificate does not guarantee the perfect member. No platform, intake process, or application review can promise that. What it does confirm is that the candidate who completes it has encountered and demonstrated understanding of the governance structures, ethical standards, hazing laws, financial responsibilities, mental health resources, risk management principles, conflict resolution tools, and organizational history that should ground every member experience. The standard is not perfection. The standard is preparation. And preparation, applied consistently, changes outcomes.
The Problem Being Solved
The crisis facing membership organizations today is not a shortage of talented, passionate candidates. It is a structural gap between the values an organization holds and the baseline knowledge a candidate arrives with. Research from Alfred University, one of the most widely cited studies on organizational culture, found that 55 percent of college students involved in clubs, teams, and organizations experience some form of hazing. The National Pan-Hellenic Council's nine member organizations represent more than five million initiates worldwide. Greek-letter organizations collectively enroll more than 800,000 undergraduate members each year. These numbers carry a persistent challenge: how does any organization, whether a fraternity, a sorority, a nonprofit board, a professional society, a church auxiliary, or a civic order, ensure that its candidates arrive not merely eager but genuinely equipped? The damage from a preventable incident is measured not only in legal exposure and organizational sanctions but in institutional reputation, community trust, and years of careful work undone in a single afternoon. MemberPrep was built to address that gap at its root.
For the Organization
For organizations, MemberPrep functions as proactive risk management as much as it does education. Chapter advisors, risk management directors, and national headquarters staff understand that the cost of a preventable incident is steep and lasting. MemberPrep's curriculum addresses federal and state hazing laws, bystander intervention, Title IX and VAWA campus compliance, organizational liability, crisis response, reporting mechanisms, and whistleblower protections as standalone, assessed courses developed by professionals who work in exactly these areas. When an organization can confirm that every candidate who came before them has already completed a structured curriculum on these subjects, the intake conversation shifts. It is no longer about introducing concepts a candidate has never encountered. It is about reinforcing what they already know and holding them to a standard they accepted before they knocked on the door.
For the Candidate
For the aspiring member, MemberPrep provides something historically unavailable: clarity. The initiation experience across most membership organizations remains, by design and tradition, largely unknown before one enters it. What has also remained unknown, and far less intentionally, is whether a candidate truly understands the responsibilities they are preparing to accept. Through coursework in organizational history, mission and values, ethical standards, governance, parliamentary procedure, financial oversight, conflict resolution, communication, and leadership, a candidate arrives at the door of any organization with a working understanding of what they are walking into. More importantly, they understand what will be expected once they are inside. That shift changes a candidate from one who is simply interested in membership to one who is genuinely ready for it.
For the Current Member
MemberPrep is not only for those on the outside looking in. Current members, whether officers, committee chairs, chapter presidents, or longtime stewards of the organization, benefit equally from its elective curriculum. The advanced tracks cover financial literacy for organizational leaders, project management for chapter officers, strategic planning, mentorship and member development, digital safety, professional development and career readiness, inclusive leadership, and alumni relations. These are not remedial subjects. They are the skills that separate an organization that survives from one that leads, that sustain the legacy, extend the mission, and ensure that the work of founders and past members is honored through the competence of those who carry it forward. Whether stepping into a first officer role or returning after years away, MemberPrep meets every member where they are.
For the Parent
For parents, particularly those whose sons and daughters are approaching fraternal or organizational membership for the first time, MemberPrep offers something no chapter advisor can fully provide: documented transparency. Parents consistently point to hazing, mental health, peer pressure, and financial accountability as their primary concerns when a student expresses interest in joining a membership organization. MemberPrep's curriculum addresses all four directly, with standalone assessed courses on member wellbeing, substance use, hazing law and institutional policy, bystander intervention, and financial oversight. When a student completes MemberPrep, the parent knows, on record, that their student has been formally educated on the risks, the rights, and the responsibilities that define organizational life. That knowledge does not remove concern. It converts concern into informed confidence.
The Foundation Forward
The organizations that will define the next century of fraternal, civic, professional, and community life are not those that resist standards. They are those that set them. Every institution that has endured, from the military to the judiciary to the academy, has done so in part because it built an educational foundation strong enough to carry the weight of its mission. MemberPrep exists to build that foundation for every membership organization willing to demand it. Whether the institution is a school, a church, a social organization, a nonprofit, a fraternity or sorority, a professional society, or a civic order, the principle holds. Prepare people before the door opens, and the organization they enter will be stronger for it. Mikael E. LaRoche built MemberPrep not as an outside observer theorizing about what organizations need, but as someone who has lived those needs as a chapter president, regional director, board member, and lifelong student of the institutions he serves. The platform is the product of that lived knowledge, structured as a tool that any candidate, member, parent, or organization can use to ensure that the tradition they love is in the best possible hands when they pass it on.
